You’d have had to have been living under a rock for the last few years to be unaware of the Toyo Proxes, the Japanese tyre manufacturer’s flagship performance-focused tyre. Indeed, so successful has the Proxes been that it has gone through a number of evolutionary upgrades over the course of its existence, most recently becoming the Proxes R888R, a devastatingly effective bit of rubber that’s proved its worth on roads and race-around the world. This success has encouraged Toyo to expand the R888R range, and from early 2017 it will be available in an even greater selection of sizes.

It’s worth taking a few steps back to properly drill down into what makes the R888R such an effective tyre for those that demand the last word in handling poise, grip and traction. The original R888 Proxes was famed as a ‘jack of all trades’ tyre, one every bit as capable of performing in scorching hot temperatures as it was in cold, and able to function impressively well in both damp and wet conditions.

These traits meant that it was swiftly adopted as the tyre of choice for dozens of club race series across the world, as well as countless trackday drivers and in a move which underscored its abilities, was picked by Renault as the OE fitment tyre for the Megane R26R.

The R888R superseded the R888 at the start of last year and has already proven its worth, being both completely road-legal and suitable for committed track work. This broad spread of capabilities is largely unmatched in this sector, with the vast majority of offerings from rival firms having been rendered illegal for road use thanks to the revised tyre labeling regulations that came into force in November 2014. This means that not only is the GG compound of the new tyre approved for road use, so too is the even grippier SG compound, though only on PXR888 pattern tyres.

Toyo’s decision to dramatically increase the number of sizes included within the Proxes R888R range means that, from 2017, the tyre’s amazing abilities will be available for more cars than ever before. The complete list of fitment options offered can be found below.
