DMO CONTINUE THE LEGEND
A Lotus Seven-inspired sportscar that has kept a slightly low profile in recent times is the Legend, devised and formerly marketed by Pete Lathrope at GKD Sportscars. It’s now under the control of DMO Sportscars run by Steven Bruyninckx.
The BMW-based kit is a truly excellent product and can use the mechanicals of either E36 or E46 generations of the Bavarian manufacturer’s 3-Series or ‘Dreier’ to our German friends.
The car utilises a good chunk of the donor over and above the engine and gearbox including major stuff like driveshafts, differential, steering assembly and brakes right down to handbrake and gearlever and if you wish, battery and wheels.
The Legend features a fabricated steel spaceframe chassis, a body from aluminium panels topped-off by GRP nosecone, scuttle and wings.
The kit starts with the ‘On Demand’ package consisting of the chassis and a few other parts to get you rolling, which costs £1595. Next comes the ‘Essential’ pack, which adds suspension, aluminium panels, all GRP parts, steering components and fuel tank. This option costs £4995.
Alternatively, you can go the Comprehensive route, which features pretty much everything you need, apart from your donor parts to build a car. This pack costs £10,995.
I drove a four-cylinder-powered version several years ago on a bright summer’s day around the leafy lanes of mid-Kent and I had a ball. The Legend particularly impressed with its fine handling courtesy of BMW components and fabricated wishbones and coil-over dampers.
Since then a version that uses a six-cylinder Beemer engine, up to and including an M3-options (circa 343bhp) has been introduced. Builds and kit sales are handled by Aeon Sportscars.
