HIGH-REVVING-CRANKSHAFT
Mar 14th
Small block Chevys were designed to be high revving. Light weight and a short stroke/large bore design let that first 265 cubic inch engine make good power up to about 5000-5500rpm, unheard of in 1955 when flathead Ford V8s ran out of steam at three grand or so.
Today you can build a small block Chevy to make power well beyond 7000rpm with the right parts. One of the secrets to a high-RPM small block is reducing rotating assembly weight. A lightweight assembly can spin faster, so the engine can hit its powerband quicker. It also takes less horsepower to rotate, More >
HEEL AND ‘TOW’

Sealey’s TST22 Towing Socket Tester is MOT-approved for use in stations on vehicle classes 4, 5 and 7.
It’s a quick and simple test of 12V 13-pin Euro-type sockets fitted to the rear of the vehicle. It is supplied with 4.9m cable to enable the operator to use the tool while sitting in the car.
It features a self-test facility to ensure the serviceability of the tool and is powered by the 12V vehicle supply. It also tests the 12V continuous/ignition live feeds and the reversing lights – not part of the current MOT test, but useful when diagnosing electrical faults.

GENTRY IS BACK IN PRODUCTION

A kitcar that I have always liked and one that has sold in very good numbers is the Gentry, which is celebrating a superb 45th birthday, this year.
Created by an engineer called Roger Blockley, who ran RMB Sportscars (RMB stood for nothing more exotic than ‘Roger Michael Blockley’) in Barwell, Leicestershire, he’d worked on the Spitfire production line (that’s Triumph rather than Supermarine!) and had an understandable fondness for the Triumph marque and expert knowledge on Herald, Vitesse and Spit, in particular.
His Gentry, a more than passable take on the MG TD, was launched in 1974 and some 2500 have been More >

GIVE IT THE TREATMENT
Mar 7th
As a car care devotee there are several brands and companies that I really favour. The simple reason is they are run by nice people and sell great products that make your car look better.
One such company is Downham Market-based Shipshape of Norfolk, who for many years have been the UK importers of the Collinite range of products. Just lately they have become the home here for another American brand called The Treatment and I’ve been putting some of the range through its paces.
One that has really grabbed me is their Carnauba Paste Wax that has the performance of paste waxes More >

LOCKED IN PLACE
Mar 7th
Locking the crankshaft is an essential job when carrying out many maintenance and repair tasks on modern engines. Often when the engine has been removed from the vehicle and the gearbox separated, there is no easy way to lock the crankshaft.
The new Laser Tools flywheel locking tool (part number 7511) is unique in its design and simplicity and allows the user to quickly and simply lock the flywheel via the ring gear when the engine has been separated from the gearbox.
This will allow, for example, the removal of the flywheel or front pulley retaining bolts, or keeping the crankshaft locked More >
NO, I’VE DONE THE ‘IT’S A WRENCH’ LINE BEFORE!

When a ‘proper’ ratchet is on the job there’s a feeling of security and unquestionable control that lesser tools simply don’t possess. The Matador Z90 ratchet is one such tool. A tool that instantly gains trusts the moment the 90-tooth ratchet mechanism spins with high quality, multi-tooth click.
It’s only when you hold a quality tool like this that you’re instantly aware of its heavy-duty engineering heritage, a past that this German-made ratchet can be very proud of given that Matador started out in a former hammer mill in the early 1900s.
That’s not to say the Z90 can’t hold its own More >

376 REASONS TO BUY A BLUEPRINT GM ENGINE!
Mar 7th
Summit Racing reckon that you might be able to build a GM LS engine that can make close to the 530bhp and 495 lb-ft of torque this BluePrint Engines Pro Series engine does, but it won’t be easy or cheap, and it certainly won’t come dyno-tested or backed by a 30 month/50,000-mile limited warranty like the BluePrint mill does.
BluePrint built this 376 CID (6.2L) engine with the good stuff:
- GM 6.2-litre aluminium block
- 3.622in stroke nodular iron crankshaft
- 6.098in long connecting rods with bolts rated to 150,000 PSI
- Hypereutectic pistons, 10.7:1 compression with 72cc heads
- Hydraulic roller camshaft, 225°/238° duration @ .050, .612”/.585” lift, 113° More >
